I have been on the hunt to find good shirts for ladies that are long enough to be and stay tucked into my pants. I recently went to Old Navy and they had an awesome polo that came in black and white and the shirt was long in every size. It was around $12 which is decent for the quality. They also had polos for men that seemed suitable and a good selection of black and khaki work pants that came in several different styles. I just thought I'd spread the find since it's something I've been looking for for a while. Happy shopping!

Opportunity to touch the world - Matagalpa region of Nicaragua

Hello all,

Thought I would share an opportunity to join me and make a difference in a part of the world less fortunate than ours. First, a little history…

Back in 2006, I met Tanya and Nelson Amador, a wonderful couple in my town of Maple Valley, WA. Tanya is from the Seattle area and Nelson grew up in the Matagalpa region of Nicaragua. They both have made it their life’s mission to lead humanitarian teams to serve thousands in these impoverished Nicaraguan villages. Through medical, dental and optical clinics, family sponsorships, water improvement projects, educational aid, and training in sustainable farming and trades, their organization has grown into a major source of assistance for people in the Matagalpa region. This organization is called Corner of Love, an independent non-profit organization.

I volunteered to help Tanya in centralizing their contact database and quickly became involved in US-based activities including the annual fundraising auction. The only thing left was to actually GO on a trip to Nicaragua. I felt I couldn’t do it, that I was ill-equipped. I mean, what could I personally do on a medical brigade? My Spanish skills are ok for a restaurant, but shaky otherwise and other than some basic first aid, I have no medical training. What could I do? How could I make a difference?

After finally building up some courage to actually go, I kicked myself in the behind for not having gone sooner! I learned that to make a difference, one just has to have a willing heart, leave one's ego at home, and just focus on the objective to help others. Since 2010, I’ve gone on a medical brigade trip each year – and none of the trips have been the same! Each trip lasts a week and during that week at least one thousand people receive medical treatment as well as much needed gently used clothing and shoes.

I know parents who have taken their children on these trips – it exposes the next generation to what it means to have empathy and think globally, and it is a great lesson in humility and appreciation for who and what we have at home.

From November 9-16, I will be going on the “Coffee Fincas Medical Brigade.” This is the one trip of the year where the focus is to hold medical clinics at small coffee farms. Not only would you have a role in providing healthcare for the coffee farm workers and their families, you would see up close and personal the coffee plants and in some cases, steps in the coffee farming process.

There are many other trips throughout the year. If you are interested in the Coffee Fincas trip or any other trip, please go to http://corneroflove.org/forms-documents/ to see what the trips entail. Please feel free to contact me (dvance@starbucks.com, 206-318-8501) if you have more specific questions on the trip experience, would like to see some pictures from the Coffee Fincas trip I took in November 2012, or if you're not ready to go on a trip but would like to help.

Not every trip has to be a vacation – make a difference and touch the world! If you have a willing heart, you are well prepared to serve.
