Description of volunteer effort:

On Martin Luther King, Jr Day, 100 Miami-Dade County middle school students will honor the memory of Dr. King as they begin their five-month participation in the City Year Heroes Program. The inspiring Heroes Opening Ceremony will take place on Monday, January 17, 2011 and will be immediately followed by a day of service in the Allapattah community with service at Lenora B. Smith Elementary School and Allapattah Middle School, where City Year Young Heroes, Miami corps members, family, friends, alumni and Starbucks partners celebrate the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. through an afternoon of transformative physical service. This event will continue the tradition of City Year making Martin Luther King, Jr. Day a "day on" rather than a day off, to commemorate the legacy of Dr. King through community building, serivce and reflection.
