Earth Day 2012 - Washington DC

Hello Partners –

As many of you know on Sunday April 22^nd partners and customers came together to celebrate Earth Day and Starbucks Global Month of Service at The National Zoo in Washington DC. As the rain poured down on Saturday and I continued to watch the forecast I was truly nervous about the turnout for Sunday. As 7:30am came around I was amazed at the partners/customers that began walking up the path to the registration table. I can say for myself I was speechless as I saw more and more partners and customers! At the end of the day we totaled 265 volunteers for 800+ hours and we donated $27,450 to FONZ.

Partners and customers were working side by side in the moat cleaning and scooping out months of debris. Volunteers worked deep into the moat while other volunteers created an line to move the bags from the moat to the top. Bags and bags of trash were seen moving from one person to another until the moat was clear and the volunteers were ready to take on additional projects! In true Starbucks fashion the work was done quickly and with a smile! It was amazing to see the smiling faces, the connections being made, and old friends coming together again alongside the customers they serve every day. We saw partners from different districts, areas, kids of partners and customers, and other parts of the business from License Stores, Facilities, and even the York Roasting Plant. Below are some comments that I heard over the course of the project:

“I can’t tell you how grateful we are for the relationship with Starbucks. This is how the Zoo began years ago by volunteers like you coming out to help make this Zoo better.” – Director of FONZ (Friends of the National Zoo)

“I cannot believe how fast these Starbucks partners are in cleaning up trash but I guess as fast as they are in the stores it makes sense!” – Customer

“Look how many green shirts keep coming around the corner.” – Partner

“I feel like we are one big family helping to make this Zoo perfect for my kids and my grandkids.” – Partner

“This rain and cold weather wasn't going to stop me from getting my hands dirty.” – Partner

“Because of all of your hard work and many hands we accomplished more than expected and we can’t thank you enough!” – National Zoo Horticulturist

I have attached my favorite pictures to this email however all of the pictures will be posted on the community website over the next few days. I would ask that if you have any pictures or memories from the day please take a few minutes and upload them on the website. Again I am truly grateful to be a Starbucks partner, grateful for FONZ for giving us the opportunity to complete this project, and most of all grateful to all of you who came out and completed in this service project!

With April Month of Service coming to an end I know we will continue to keep community service alive and work hard to help the company hit the goal of 1,000,000 service hours by 2015! We have many other service projects around the area so please continue to search for opportunities on the website and I will continue to communicate through email as well.

Today meant so much to the zoo, thank you ALL for volunteering! What did it mean to YOU? For me personally, it meant feeling like I was part of something much bigger, a movement led by Starbucks all over the world to give back, pay it forward, and make a difference. I would love to hear your thoughts!

I am so excited for this project. I use to work at zoo when I was in high school and had so much fun, so I know this will be a blast.

I'm bringing my step daughter and my daughter...we can't wait to come and work at the zoo!!!
