Description of volunteer effort:
Our project is entering a new phase at Dr. Jose Rizal Park on Seattle's Beacon Hill, with the discovery and renewal of a significant apple orchard that promises to be a sustainable, organic model for other public orchards in Seattle and the greater Puget Sound area. We'll be performing maintenance in the orchard, expanding its grounds to include area for a proposed community garden, as well as work in the forest, tending significant trees and other plants we've established in the last two years. We'll also do some trail maintenance work on a path that gives us access to the woods and the orchard. All tools are provided on site, purchased with funds from successful grants. This is the fifth year of the project - so far, we've planted over 7,000 native trees and other plants, and cleared ivy from over 1,000 trees. Volunteers and professional crews have cleared ivy and blackberry from 3 acres so far - that's over 130,000 square feet!
You can't create projects here, but watch for projects you might be interested in.
