Dr. King believed that powerful things could happen if we all worked together toward one common goal. This year, City Year Detroit, United Way for Southeastern Michigan and Starbucks have partnered together in a collaboration of service to honor Martin Luther King, Jr.

Your work on Monday, January 16th, 2012, alongside hundreds of other volunteers in our region, and millions of volunteers across the United States, will shed light on the fact that good things can, and do, happen when everyone works together. Thank you for making the decision to volunteer on the 2012 MLK Day of Service, and keeping Dr. King's dream alive.

Project Description: Volunteers will help sort and assemble hygiene items into kits that will be distributed to the homeless and homeless veterans; paint inspirational canvas murals that will be placed within under served schools in the area and create and personalize "Thank You" and "Welcome Home" cards for active duty soldiers and veterans.

Timing: The morning rally will be at the same location and time last year:  Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan Bricktown Auditorium in Detroit; 9-10am sign in and continental breakfast, and the rally will go from 10-11:15.  From there, volunteers will depart for the service project location: Harper Woods High School 20225 Beaconsfield Harper Woods, MI 48225-1395

Next Step: IMPORTANT!!! After signing up here on our community website - please also register with the United Way as they are coordinating ALL of the volunteers. They are currently holding about 100 slots for Starbucks partners to serve together at one project, but it still important that people register as early as possible, and by Monday, January 9th at the latest.  Due to the large number of volunteers they will be coordinating, the online registration system will pool any unfilled slots after January 9th to make them available to other interested volunteers.
